Daylight
(Stein x Reader)

You sighed dramatically as you snatched another handful of tissues from your bedside table.  Your nose was ruby red, your eyes were puffy, and you could hardly breathe from all the congestion.  “Figures…”  You muttered.  “I come back to the DWMA after all this time to see my old classmate and THIS happens…”
Suddenly there was a knock on your door.  You tipped your head back irritably and groaned.  “Who is it?”
“Your mailman,” a voice called back sarcastically.
You arched an eyebrow.  You knew that voice.  “Come in.”
The door creaked open and a man with silvery gray hair and green eyes entered the room.  His glasses gleamed as the light from your lamp hit them.  You smiled.
“Stein.  It’s so good to-” You grabbed your sides as a dull pain shot through your lungs.  You shuddered a bit as a violent cough rattled your entire body.
“You look terrible,” Stein stated flatly as he approached your bed.  You opened your mouth to speak, but stopped as he placed a hand on your forehead.  “And you’re burning up.  How long have you been like this?”
You shrugged.  “A couple of days, I guess…”
You grabbed a pillow and shoved it into your abdomen as you began coughing uncontrollably.  Stein frowned slightly.
“Symptoms?”
“Headache…fatigue…congestion…my lungs are sore from where I’ve coughed so much…it’s hard to breathe…I’m so cold I can’t stand it…also, I’m a bit nauseous,” you admitted with a slight blush.  Your face was already red, though, so it was hard to tell a difference.
“Pneumonia,” Stein stated confidently.  He sighed.  “Why haven’t you been to see a doctor?”
“I hate doctors!  You know that!”  You snapped before erupting into another coughing fit.  Stein chuckled and arched an eyebrow quizzically.  You rolled your eyes.  “You know I don’t mean you…”
Stein picked up one of your jackets that was lying on a chair nearby and tossed it to you.  You frowned slightly.  “Get up.  I’m taking you to a clinic.”
“No!”  You objected immediately.  “I don’t feel like going anywhere!”  You coughed loudly and a sharp pain shot through your head.  You brought your knees up to your chest and rested your head between them.  Stein eyed you worriedly.
“Alright,” he said.  “Then I’ll bring someone to-”
“No,” you interrupted.  “Why don’t you take care of me?  You’re a doctor, right?” Stein’s mouth twitched slightly.  He sighed as you gripped his hand in yours gently.  You tried to smile, but it looked weak and half-dazed.  “Please?”

“S-Stein?”  You stuttered.  You were shivering so hard that you could actually hear your teeth chattering.  Stein glanced up from the book he was reading and eyed you emotionlessly.
“Yes?”
“I’m r-really, really c-cold…”  You said lowly.  Sweat poured down your forehead and your neck, but you were still freezing.  Goosebumps covered your arms and legs.
“I already told you, you can’t have a blanket.  It’ll only make your fever go up,” Stein told you sternly.  He began reading again.  “Just go to sleep.”
You nodded slowly and laid your head down onto your pillow.  Stein glanced at you as he tucked his finger under the next page of his book.  You looked pitiful.  You were curled into a tight ball with your arms wrapped around your knees trying your best not to shiver.  After a moment, you began coughing.  It was a wet, violent cough that made you shiver even worse.  Stein sighed and laid his book down on your bedside table.  He rested one arm on the side of your bed and laid his chin atop it while stroking your hair with his other hand.
“You’ve always been such a bother, you know that?”  He whispered gently.  You smiled slightly and nodded.  “Why’d you come back here anyways?”
Your eyes opened slightly and your smile widened.  “To see you.”
Stein closed his eyes and tipped his forehead against yours, checking your fever.  “I see.”
“You’re not bad, you know,” you muttered.  Stein’s eyes flashed open.  He started at you questioningly.
“What’s that?”
“Y-You aren’t bad…maybe the madness affects you a little more, but…you’re a good person, Stein,” you said with a smile.  Stein sat up straight and sighed.  ‘Good…her fever has broken…’ he thought.  You yawned.  “Will you be here when I wake up?”
Stein nodded.  “Yes.”
“Good…”  You whispered dreamily.  It wasn’t long before you drifted off to sleep.
“What a bother…”  Stein smiled.  He pushed his glasses up onto the bridge of his nose and glanced out of the window.  The sun was beginning to rise.  “I’ll probably be here ‘til daylight tomorrow.”
