What About Love?
(Envy x Reader)
You lie in bed, half-asleep, half-awake. It had been a rather boring day. You worked in your father’s bakery and as usual you smiled, laughed, and rejected at least five different guys who had gathered up enough courage to ask you out on a date. Your most frequent lines were, “sorry but I’m going to be busy this week” or “I’d like to but with my busy work schedule, I just don’t have the time”. Both were true, but they were also excuses. Honestly, you didn’t really care about dating. You had never found a boy that you thought was interesting…not yet, anyways.
There was a light tapping sound on your window. You turned and blinked a few times only to see a black cat perched on the windowsill. Its eyes watched you expectantly. It opened its mouth and meowed quietly. You smiled slightly and flipped the latch. It took some effort to lift the window (considering you never opened it) but once it was ajar, the cat slipped inside swiftly. Your eyes widened as it jumped onto the bed and turned around twice before lying down. You closed the window and leaned forwards so that you might pet the furry creature.
“Hi, there,” you greeted it gently. The cat meowed and moved forwards so that you might touch its head. Your smile widened and you giggled in a very girly manner. The cat’s mouth turned upwards into what looked like a smirk and it tilted its head slightly. “What are you doing here? Are you lost?”
“Maybe,” an impish voice spoke suddenly. The cat transformed into a tall, androgynous looking young man with pale skin and violet eyes. He had long, greenish black hair and a muscular physique. It took you a moment to distinguish whether or not you were actually talking to a boy. Your eyes widened and you hid yourself underneath your sheets.
“Who are you?” You demanded. You tried to sound confident and in control, but the crack in your voice ruined it. The young man chuckled and eyed you curiously.
“Envy,” he replied simply. “And I know who you are. _____ ______. You work in a bakery owned by your father and you study alchemy at night. Also, you seem to enjoy rejecting men and shattering their self-confidence.”
Envy chuckled as he spoke the last part. A maniacal grin graced his facial features. You frowned slightly and gripped the sheets tightly. “That’s not true!”
“Isn’t it, though?” Envy slipped off of your bed and stretched. He glanced back at you over his shoulder and put his hands on his hips. “You reject every guy who asks you out. I just love the look on their faces!”
You stood angrily and stomped your foot in a pouty manner. Envy arched an eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest. Your face was burning scarlet.
“Be quiet! What do you know?” You snapped, your tone acidic.
“I’ve been watching you for weeks. I know a lot more than you think,” Envy commented with a devilish smile.
There was a moment of silence as the two of you stared at one another. A rueful grin appeared on your facial features. “Stalker.”
Envy blinked a few times. His eyes narrowed dangerously. “Am not!”
“Are too,” you hummed teasingly. You laughed as Envy’s face and neck turned bright red with anger and embarrassment. He turned and huffed loudly.
You slipped on a housecoat and pulled your hair back into a low ponytail. Envy avoided looking at you as you moved around the room.
“Why have you been watching me, anyways?” You asked curiously. Envy glanced over his shoulder and tilted his head slightly.
“I’ve been bored,” he replied simply. “I haven’t received any new orders recently and I needed something to do.”
Envy snapped his fingers suddenly, as if he had just remembered something, and lifted the window with an effortless tug. You watched with a blank expression.
“What are you-”
“I just remembered why I came here tonight,” he interrupted you. “I wanted to know if you’d like to come roof hopping with me.”
“Roof…what?” You scratched your head and stared at the strange young man stupidly. He arched an eyebrow mischievously.
“Or are you going to turn me down too?”
Your expression turned thoughtful. You opened your mouth, then closed it. With an irritable sigh, you finally consented.
Before you could react, Envy swept you off your feet and leapt out of the window. You opened your mouth to scream, but he pressed his hand over it and winked at you.
“Humans are just so predictable,” he chuckled.
You wrapped your arms around his neck and held on tightly. You closed your eyes and held your breath. You could feel the wind brush against your face and arms. It tousled your hair and tickled your cheeks. Envy sighed.
“You’re missing the best part,” he said. His warm breath fanned your lips, causing you to flinch. You opened one eye, then the other. You gasped.
Buildings rushed by quickly and you could see street-lamps lit down below. Cars were parked in almost every space available and a few dogs barked at you as you glided by. You smiled brightly and glanced at Envy.
“This is amazing!” You exclaimed.
He grinned slightly and quickened the pace. As he landed on one of the roofs, he bent his knees and sprung high into the air. There was a slight jolt as he landed onto a building much higher than the others. He plopped you down onto the hard tiling.
“Ouch…hey!” You snapped. Envy glanced down at you. His expression was a bit different than before. It was…uncertain maybe? You sat there for a moment. A gust of wind blew past, causing you to shiver slightly. You started to stand when Envy extended his hand to you. You glanced from it, to him, then back again. He was watching you with an unreadable gaze.
You took his slender hand and no sooner had you wrapped your fingers around his then he pulled you to your feet. You blinked a few times. The boy was inhumanly strong, that was for sure. You stared at one another for a moment.
“Thanks…” You muttered.
Envy didn’t reply. He merely stared out at the city. You both remained silent for a while. You felt something deep inside of you that you couldn’t quite describe. Your heart was racing from the excitement, that was for sure, but now that you were still and everything was calm, why did you still feel so jittery and nervous? You sat down and stared off into the distance. Envy joined you. He sighed.
“So what’s your deal?” He asked finally.
“Hmm?” You glanced at him questioningly.
“Why don’t you ever go out with anyone? That’s what humans do isn’t it?”
“What humans do?” You repeated slowly. “I don’t quite understand…”
Envy grew irritated. His eyebrow twitched slightly.
“Boy meets girl, boy asks girl out, boy and girl go on date, boy and girl-”
“I get it,” you interrupted flatly. “I don’t know…I’ve just never really been interested in anyone.”
This caught Envy’s attention. He arched an eyebrow curiously.
You shrugged. Another gust of wind blew by. You hugged your housecoat close to your shoulders and folded your knees to your chest. You laid your chin atop of them and stared blankly at nothing in particular.
“What about ‘love’?” Envy spoke mockingly. He grinned impishly. “I hear humans can’t live without it.”
You smiled slightly. “What about it?”
There was an awkward pause. You tilted your head slightly.
“Hey. You keep calling me ‘human’. What are you exactly?”
Envy stood and arched an eyebrow. You stood as well and dusted yourself off. “Don’t you wish you knew~?”
You rolled your eyes and yawned. The strange young man sighed and swept you back into his arms.
“Time to take you back, I suppose.”
You frowned slightly. “Why? I’m not tired.”
Another yawn escaped your lips. Envy snorted loudly and rolled his eyes. “Yeah. Right.”
As you soared through the air, your mind began to wander. You closed your eyes and leaned your head against Envy’s chest. You really were tired. After all you had been working all day. You didn’t want your strange new friend to leave, however. You sighed.
“Hey…Envy?” You yawned.
“Will you come and see me again tomorrow night?”
Envy hesitated. He considered your question for a moment, then shrugged.
Envy laid you down onto your bed. You were already fast asleep. He approached the window and propped his hand against the glass. He bent slightly then paused. He glanced back over his shoulder. “You’re a weird one…but I must admit I’m sort of curious,” he muttered.
There was a slight whooshing sound as Envy leapt through the window. You smiled slightly and turned. Your heart was still racing even as you slept.
To be continued…
