Wake-Up Call

(Midnight x Reader)

You weren’t sure why they had let you join, or even why you were part of a dark guild in the first place.  You were lost and hungry, you discovered Oracion Seis, they respected your power as a mage, and that was that.  The only problem was…they never let you do anything.

    Your first mission ended up being a flop.  You destroyed the entire area, but the target escaped (how, you still don’t know).  There was now a giant crater in the middle of an immense forest.  You idly wondered if it might become a lake or something useful in the future…probably not, but it was still pretty impressive.

Your boss, however, was not impressed.

    Ever since then all you did was tag along with other members and watch as they tried to find some sort of secret magic known only to you as Nirvana.  You weren’t sure what it was, or even why they wanted it, but apparently it was pretty important.

There was only one thing that kept you from dying of boredom…

“Hey.”

“……”

“You asleep?”

“………..”

“Hellooooooooo?”

“………………………..”

Your lips curled into a rather evil looking smirk as you lifted the magic marker to Midnight’s face and began scribbling different shapes and symbols onto his cheeks and forehead.  The mage didn’t even flinch.

“You’re going to get into trouble for that you know,” Cobra muttered.  He sighed as you stood back to admire your work.

“Am not!”

“Are too.”  He yawned and cracked his neck before continuing.  “Wanna make a bet?”

Your ears perked at Cobra’s suggestion.  There was a hollow popping sound as you capped your marker.  “I do, actually.  What are we wagering?”

Cobra’s expression turned thoughtful.  He tapped his chin momentarily before directing his attention back to you.  “How about if I win, you take the next scout patrol?  I need to catch up on some sleep.”

“Alright,” you nodded.  “And if I lose I have to take the patrol!”

Cobra nodded for a moment.  You had to cover your mouth with your hand to keep from laughing at the agreement.  Either way, you just wanted to do something.  It was boring staring at your comrades all day long.  You needed to get out and stretch your legs for a bit.

    Soon, you grew impatient.  Midnight had been sleeping forever (as usual), and you knew he wouldn’t wake up any time soon.  In order to gain his attention, you began poking his shoulder with a nearby twig.

“You really think that’s a good idea?  Plus, if the markers didn’t wake him up, what makes you think—” Cobra paused as you used the leave dangling at the end of the twig to tickled Midnight’s neck.  You trailed it up and down then across his jawline, until the sleeping mage finally stirred.  His entire body shuddered as his eyes fluttered open.  An odd grin flickered across your face as you tossed the twig over your shoulder and started rummaging through your pockets.  Before Midnight could speak, you shoved a small compact mirror into his face.

    Midnight’s dark eyes stared vacantly at his marred reflection.  You could feel Cobra looming over your shoulder as the two of you awaited his reaction.

Midnight crossed his arms over his chest.

He exhaled an annoyed huff that deflated his entire body.

With closed eyes, he muttered, “Idiot.”

You flashed Cobra a victorious smile as Midnight’s head lolled back and forth in his sleep.  “I win!”
