Special
(A Sesshomaru Fan-fic)

I awoke in a cold sweat.  Light from the full moon filtered through the trees and illuminated my surroundings.  I was in a forest that was teeming with life.  An owl was perched nearby.  His golden orbs stared unblinkingly in my direction.  I stood and started removing leaves and twigs from my clothes.  He watched with the same blank expression.  It was kind of unnerving.  In the background, choirs of crickets and tree-frogs sung out as loudly as their vocal chords allowed them to do.  Invisible to the ear, but clearly audible, they were a bit annoying.  I glanced in the direction of my travelling companions and saw that the imp was still sleeping.  Beside him was a large patch of flattened grass in the outline of a person.  I arched an eyebrow curiously.
It didn’t take me long to find him.  There was a meadow nearby that was filled with wildflowers.  Their fragrance was heavy on the warm summer breeze.  But as beautiful as they were, they were no comparison to the figure standing amongst them.  His snow white hair swayed gently as the wind picked up.  The fur that was draped across his shoulder was tugged in the same direction.  He looked elegant and somewhat mystical, like a creature from a fairytale.  His golden eyes were sharp and intelligent, his expression unreadable.  I found myself staring.  I was a bit dumbfounded.
In his hand was a sword.  Its blade gleamed with the light of the moon and reflected the impassive face of its wielder like a mirror.  I had never seen it unsheathed before.  I took a step forwards.  “Your sword,” I said slowly.  “I’ve never seen it before, Lord Sesshomaru.”
Sesshomaru’s eyes darted in my direction.  His stoic expression did not change.  He raised a hand and beckoned me forwards.  I complied with little consideration.  My eyes were locked on the sword, entranced by its shine.  Sesshomaru spoke, pulling me away from my wonderment.
“Tenseiga,” he said simply.  His voice was smooth like velvet.  Its sound was rarely heard yet I cherished it.  “It’s a sword that cannot cut.”
Before I had time to think, I started laughing.  It was a clear, cheerful sound, like the ringing of a bell. I covered my mouth immediately, my eyes widening.  I searched Sesshomaru’s face for any sign of irritation: an arched brow, a narrowed gaze, a curl of his lips.  I saw nothing but impassiveness.
“Forgive me,” I was flushed from embarrassment.  “But isn’t that rather peculiar?  What good is a sword that cannot cut?”
Sesshomaru stared at me for a moment.  He held out his hand expectantly.  I watched him with a blank expression.  He looked from me, to his hand, then back to me again.  I slipped my hand into his hesitantly, all the while observing Sesshomaru carefully.  He pulled my closer so that we were mere inches apart.  I could feel the heat radiating off of his body.  The sweet fragrance of cherry-blossoms permeated the area around him.  I was as still as a stone statue.  My heart started to race.  Sesshomaru positioned my hand palm-up in his own.  His eyes flickered to mine before he brought the blade tearing across my skin.
I winced expectantly but the pain never arrived.  There was a bright purple glow and my skin remained unscathed.
“You didn’t pull away,” Sesshomaru noted.
I nodded once.  “I trust you.”
There was a moment of silence as Sesshomaru and I watched each other’s expressions, searching for a reaction of some sort.  I was the first to break.  My face colored and I glanced away timidly.  I felt a pressure against my palm.  Sesshomaru placed the Tenseiga in my grasp and curled my fingers around it with his own.
“The Tenseiga.  The sword that can save a hundred lives,” he said quietly.  I gripped the hilt of the sword carefully and ran the fingertips of my left hand down the flat of its blade.  The cool steel reminded me of water.  I smiled, my curiosity feeling well-indulged.
“What a wonderful power,” I mused.  “To be able to save the ones you love.”
I glanced at Sesshomaru.  Something softened in his features.  He looked....pleased.
The warmth of his hand over mine disappeared and was relocated to my face.  Sesshomaru placed his hand on my cheek and leaned forwards slightly.  My hands fell to my sides.  The tip of the Tenseiga’s blade brushed against the ground, disturbing a colony of ants that had been resting there previously.  Everything started to fade away.  The crickets and the tree-frogs were hushed, the eyes of the owl were averted.  I closed my eyes expectantly as I felt his warm breath touch my lips faintly.  Then…reality came crashing back to me like a wrecking-ball.
“Lord Sesshomaru!”  Jaken’s oddly pitched voice called from a distance.  I sighed as the moment vanished.  Sesshomaru took a step back, creating a gap between us that I found very frustrating and uncalled for.  He stared emotionlessly in the direction of his servant’s voice but said nothing.  I bowed my head and held the Tenseiga out in front of me.
“Your sword, Lord Sesshomaru,” I said evently.  I was feeling a mixture of desire and irritation, both evenly as strong.  Sesshomaru took the sword and sheathed it gracefully.  Jaken came stumbling into the meadow.
“Lord Sesshomaru, is that human girl bothering you again?” He glared at me, his pale yellow orbs as large as light-bulbs.
Sesshomaru shook his head slowly.  A grin, barely visible, graced his features.
“No.  Everything is fine.  I couldn’t sleep and Asame was helping me to resolve a problem that’s been bothering me for a while now.”
‘A problem?’  I stared at Sesshomaru with a stupid expression on my face.  He glanced at me, the grin growing slightly.
“We’ll continue this later,” he assured me.
I nodded.  My irritation was replaced by confusion.  Sesshomaru walked past Jaken, back towards camp.  “Thank you, Asame.”
“You’re…welcome?” My voice raised an octave at the end of my sentence, posing a question.  Jaken looked from me, to Sesshomaru, then back to me again.  He sighed.
“I don’t understand.  Lord Sesshomaru hates humans.  Why does he associate with you?  What makes you so special?”
I shrugged.  That was a question that I asked myself regularly.  Sesshomaru let me travel with them and even protected me.  But why?  I sighed.
“I don’t have a clue…”

THE END
Okay...so this is my first Inuyasha fan fiction! I know it's kind of random but I hope you all like it n_n!

I really like it, mostly because all the atmosphere feels real.
Aaand because it doesn't end with the random"I love you" kinda line, which makes no sense without a little plot there.
Sorry I felt like pointing out. ^^
