“Woah!  There’s sooooo much stuff!”  You exclaimed as you hopped from window to window.  You scared one lady half to death as she tried dressing a mannequin in the store’s new “winter wear”.  Toshiro’s eyebrow twitched as he watched you grow more and more hyper by the second.

“Yes, there is,” he agreed as he grabbed your arm and pulled you away from a boutique.  Your ears flattened underneath the toboggan.

“Why do you have to be such a downer all the time?  This is amazing!”  As you inhaled the crisp, winter wind you caught a whiff of the most delicious scent you had ever smelled.  You quickly took hold of Toshiro’s gloved hand and started dragging him towards a nearby candy store.  When you reached it, you immediately smacked your face against the glass and stared at all the wonderful treats inside.  Toshiro sighed and opened the door, causing a bell to chime.

“Wouldn’t you rather go inside?”  He suggested flatly.  A slight breeze ruffled Toshiro’s scarf as you rushed by him in a dark blur.

  “What would the little lady like?”  The storekeeper asked.  He was a tall, round man with a pleasant smile and a bushy mustache.  The inside of the store was warm, so you immediately unzipped your coat and let it fall onto the floor.  Toshiro scrambled to pick it up as you looked at the wide variety of candy.

“Umm…let’s see…”

“Why don’t you just let the storekeeper recommend something if you aren’t sure?”  Toshiro asked as he tried folding your puffy coat into a neat square.  Eventually he gave up and wadded it into a ball.

“Good idea!  Your tail trembled excitedly under your skirt.  “What do you recommend for someone who likes (favorite flavor candy)?”

The storekeeper’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment, then he walked over to a large barrel filled with (candy of choice).   “Would a bag of these do?”

You quickly nodded, but your ears drooped as you remembered that you didn’t really have any money.  You gave Toshiro a sheepish glance.

“What?”  His face was totally expressionless.

“I’m broke…”

“Then why’d you ask to go shopping in the first place?!”  Toshiro snapped.  A vein appeared on his forehead.

Your face immediately reddened.  The storekeeper, who was very keen and insightful, sensed your dilemma and cleared his throat.

“How about we call this bag a sample?  I’ll even give you enough to share on the way home,” he said with a knowing wink.  You grinned.

“That would be wonderful~!  Thank you!”

Toshiro blinked a few times.  ‘We go to a café…they give her a free latte…we enter a candy store…she gets a free bag of candy…’  He tilted his head slightly as he watched your eyes sparkle with childish excitement at the prospect of munching on (chosen candy).  All of his irritability faded away and was replaced with a sort of warm feeling.  He grinned slightly.

     “That storekeeper sure was nice!”  You exclaimed with a mouthful of (chosen candy).  Toshiro nodded once and flinched as you linked your arm with his.  He glanced down at you with a dumbfounded expression.  “I like it here in the world of the living…I wish we could stay.  Do we have to go back right away?”

Toshiro was tempted to say yes, but the desperate look in your eyes made it almost impossible.  He sighed.  “No.  We can stay for a while.”

You smiled delightedly.  “Yay!”

You were about to take another bite of your candy when something cold and wet tapped against your nose.  You went cross-eyed trying to see what it was.  It didn’t feel like rain exactly…

“Toshiro, something cold landed on my nose,” you said curiously.  To you, Toshiro was all-knowing so of course he’d know what it was.  “What was it?”

The two of you stopped walking as more and more of the strange substance began falling.  It laced your eyelashes and brushed against your cheeks.  You shivered and snuggled up closer to your companion.

“You really don’t know?”  Toshiro stared at you with a strange expression.  The warm feeling returned as he saw how utterly and adorably clueless you were.

“Huh-uh.”  Your nose twitched, which was quickly followed by a sneeze.  Toshiro chuckled lowly.  “What is it?”

“Snow.  This white stuff,” Toshiro held out his hand so that one of the flakes landed in his palm.  Against his black glove, it was easy to see.  You leaned in close.  “It’s called snow.  And no two snowflakes are exactly alike.”

“Oh!”  Your ears perked under your toboggan.  “So they’re like people!”

Toshiro’s expression became thoughtful.  “I suppose they are.”

Your cheeks became rosy and bit your lower lip.  Before Toshiro could ask you what was wrong, you threw your arms around his neck and pressed your lips to his cheek.  His skin was cold but soft.  It made you smile when you realized that he hadn’t moved or pushed you away.  When you decided to pull back, you buried your head in his chest.

“M-Merry Christmas, Toshiro,” you muttered.  “I heard couples saying it to each other in town…”

Toshiro grinned slightly and wrapped his arms around you.  “Merry Christmas, ______.”

You smiled up at him and tilted your head curiously.  “One more thing…what’s Christmas?”
